Nice try but no dice. You can take my word for it that it was cute.
Animated. Crabby as heck.

  Google.emoticons
I don't often use formatted text for email, but occasionally I want to forward something with HTML, so I turn it on in Gmail (which is a pain, because basically I have to send myself a message to get formatting 'on', and then go back to the message I want to forward. But oh, well).

So I noticed this time there's something new in the Gmail formatting bar.

Emoticons.

Part of me says "ugh. hello aol."

Part of me says "shiny!"

But the biggest part of me simply wonders what this funky crab-icon will look like on my blog.

Thus this post. And here is (maybe) the crabby:

My dog: cuter than Deb Ross' Dog
My dog is cuter than Deb Ross' dog - but that's not why you should vote for me.

Check out the pics:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=172884&l=a7ac9&id=732350111

I want to liberate Deb - and everyone else! - from being forced to pay for the things she doesn't don't want (incarcerating innocents; bombing Afghanistan; supporting bankers...) and allow her amazing creativity and compassion free rein to be entirely spent on helping folks reach their full potential.

Be free, Deb! Spend all the money you would have spent on taxes for war and injustice on making the world around you a better place. And allow others the same freedom.

That's all I ask. And THAT is why you should vote for me.

Oh, and my dog is -definitely- cuter than Deb's dog.

Can we please not use the LP's website for *Republican Party Commentary*?
I refer to this, of course:

http://www.lp.org/blogs/andrew-davis/the-republican-case-against-the-republican-party

"To be sure, Senator Barack Obama is certainly to the left of Senator
John McCain; however, it's not a stretch to say that the real John
McCain has more in common with Barack Obama than he does with his own
party...."

  In the silver lining department
Some bits of good news re: the financial fallout:

No one wants county government bonds, so they can't borrow:

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/wake/story/1245649.html

"RALEIGH - As stocks plunged Monday, Wake County commissioners learned
that the nation's worsening financial crisis will stall several
government building projects.

"The projects are likely to include the county's new downtown
court-house, libraries and some new schools that voters approved two
years ago. How long the projects might be delayed depends on how long
the economy takes to rebound.

"County manager David Cooke told the board that frozen credit markets
have rendered it impossible for the county to sell the fixed-rate
bonds -- the primary low-interest financial instruments local
governments use to borrow money for construction."

and, <gas> government might have to *cut back*. The horror!

http://www.newsobserver.com/1565/story/1246176.html

"RALEIGH, N.C. - Gov. Mike Easley says state agencies may have to dig
a little deeper soon given the uncertain economy.

"Easley said Tuesday he may order agencies soon to reduce their
budgets by 3 percent.

"The governor ordered a 2 percent cut last month to provide additional
cash reserves should this year's budget shortfall widen. The earlier
order didn't apply to public education, Medicaid and student financial
aid."

  Jeff Cooper
I just discovered Jeff Cooper in someone's signature file. He said these things:

"Personal weapons are what raised mankind out of the mud, and the
rifle is the queen of personal weapons."

"The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a
tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of
its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table,
destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In
fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry
armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized."

"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its
own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but
there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be
persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can
certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

I let go of the law, and people become honest.
I let go of economics, and people become prosperous.
I let go of religion and people become serene.
I let go of all desire for the common good,
and the good becomes common as grass.
When the will to power is in charge,
the higher the ideals, the lower the results.
