My friend Laura and I had lunch at Lake Crabtree with a baby snapping turtle last Friday. The other pics - as well as a video, I hope - are here.

The hopper and large grinding stones at the West Point Mill. I love the light in this picture. We tried to grind wheat Saturday, but the millrace was too full and the water was backed up under the wheel, causing a great deal of drag so we didn't have enough power to grind. Here's a pic of what the wheel looked like partly under water:
I had no real desire for the first Shuffle, because at the price and size I couldn't see the positive in not having a menu. Now that price and size are both reduced and it's made of beautiful aluminum, I decided to get one. And I am really enjoying it. I put large audio (book, podcast, lecture) files at the front of the playlist where they can be easily accessed, and dump a ton of music below for random access.
I fell asleep with it on last night, and dreamed I was in college. They broadcast music through the campus buildings. I was impressed that they played such cool music there, and amazed at my own hipness in knowing all the songs. Duh. I was hearing my own music.

Borat: mini-review
Maybe funny for a five-minute YouTube vid, not for a full-length film. I left after 20 minutes. Apparently not having a television has reduced my already low tolerance for low humor to about zilch. Offensive? Not really; offensive would have been a step UP for this film.

Candling an egg I'm not trying to hatch chicks, but I had the flashlight this evening and picked up a couple of blue eggs from the (still faithfully laying) araucana mutts (the nondescript half-tailed black hens which have become our favorties for their freindly personalities). So I decided to candle an egg. Very cool watching the yolk slide around. The egg looked like a map of Jupiter with the yellows and reds and stripes on the eggs.
Not sure what the circle at the wide end is; I guess maybe the air cavity at the end? It's interesting that it can't be seen at all from the outside in normal light.

State Fair feet More evidence of my continuing obession with photographing my own feet. The white stuff on the toes is talc. I like this pic because of the pics and words in the background; it was taken against the LPNC state fair booth backdrop as I was 'working' at the Fair. Sometimes we had enough vols that I just sat back and played with the camera. I took these other pics around that time, too.

I let go of the law, and people become honest.
I let go of economics, and people become prosperous.
I let go of religion and people become serene.
I let go of all desire for the common good,
and the good becomes common as grass.
When the will to power is in charge,
the higher the ideals, the lower the results.
