  Small world!
A most wonderful thing happened to me this weekend.

Background: of all the people I've met and cared for and lost contact with, DH was definitely in the top three. We were housemates in a rather bizarre situation in Kansas at a time when we were both going through tough times. DH was one of the (many) women I met in my 20s who showed me that women were my natural friends and allies in this world and not some alien creatures who I would never fathom.

OK, enough background. This weekend I attended a Beagle Meetup with Kate the freaky beagle. The Meetup was at the dogpark in North Raleigh. Now, I don't really care for dogparks, and I care even less for North Raleigh, so my chances of being there were slim. I walked across the big dog area on the way to the small dog area (I could have easily walked around it - how horrible if I had!!!) A woman called out to me while I was passing - I recognized her but couldn't 'place' her (I'm sure you know what I mean - like seeing someone from work in the grocery store...). Like an idiot I tried to brazen it out, looking for clues by asking which dogs were hers. After that got cleared up, I practically threw myself at her and halfway burst into tears (please don't ask how a person can halfway burst into tears; you had to be there). She had one of the dogs I knew from KS (and two new ones), a wonderful partner whom I hope to get to know much better in the near future, and ... a *motorcycle*! We both started riding after we knew one another. So we got together the next day for coffee and a short ride. Turns out they moved here just this year, and live within a few miles of me.

  The cameraphone actually doesn't suck
another lame dog pic

You might think my cameraphone sucks because of the earlier pics taken in the dark house in the middle of the night, or of dogs moving around while the camera is operating. But to prove it is really quite nice for a camera-phone (and, and because it's an excuse to post another lame pic of one of my dogs), here's a picture of Kate taken outside with the phone. It could benefit from some editing, but couldn't we all? Kate was at a Beagle Meetup (she's so trendy) and quickly decided she was most comfortable on top of the table looking down at the hoi polloi dogs on the ground. Actually, she's more shy than snobbish, and one of the dogs was a little too interested in her for her comfort.

  Limericks
You know it must be time to get to bed when you start reading limericks. Waiting for Scribus to slowly crash (sigh), I perused Wiki's limerick entry, where I found this gem:

A limerick fan from Australia
Regarded his work as a failure:
His verses were fine
Until the fourth line.

Genius. I am also a fan of not-rymes, and a friend shared this one:

There once was a man from Nantucket.
Who wanted to sell me a bucket...
But he couldn't because
There were too many laws
So he threw up his hands and said, "Vote Libertarian!"

Phrase of the day: a canonical work of bawdy limericks

  Kate: also not a colliething

Also not a colliething, here's a pretty grainy pic of Kate (another gem from the cell-phone). Kate is sometimes a beagle, sometimes a beagle/JRT mix, and always a pest. I'm posting it for the lady who told me that most people don't call their 'pampered pooches' 'bitch'. Well, it's true enough that Kate isn't as pampered as she would like to be, but she certainly isn't suffering - and we do call her 'the bitch'. Well, the 'other bitch', if you count me as alpha :)

I should also add that another nickname for Kate is the 'piss monster' (simply due to her tendency to want to go outside to piss so often in the evenings). One fun aspect of having dogs around is being able to speak your mind without guarding your tongue. Can you imagine calling one of those small-bladdered women who needs to stop every 100 miles on a roadtrip a 'piss monster'? To her face?

  Ed on the papasan chair
Ed with his toungue sticking out
Ed sleeping

Ed isn't a colliething, but while I was working (err, 'working') on the computer last night, I got these two snaps on my phone-camera (if you click on them, you'll see them full-size; sorry about the poor lighting). I did the close-up to show how utterly silly he looked with his tongue sticking out of his beak. The dogs are so good about working late - they would rather be in bed sleeping but will loll around the living room half-sleeping looking dazed and disgruntled (especially the colliething) rather than just turn in and sleep on the bed while I'm still up. Ed can sleep anywhere, anytime, though. I admire that in a dog. I've found that's a useful skill to cultivate, and spent much of my time at various universities perfecting it myself. To Ed it comes naturally though.

I let go of the law, and people become honest.
I let go of economics, and people become prosperous.
I let go of religion and people become serene.
I let go of all desire for the common good,
and the good becomes common as grass.
When the will to power is in charge,
the higher the ideals, the lower the results.
