While I'm thinking about people dying...
... as long as I've bothered doing an obit for Gerald Ford, I should say something nice about Milton Friedman. I haven't read much of his writing as I was kidnapped by Austrians early in my intellectual childhood and grew up thinking of the Chicago school as a sort of intellectual cover for statism. Yes, I know that's a grossly unfair characterization. At any rate, someone just sent around a bunch of Friedman quotes, among which is this gem:
The society that puts equality before freedom will end up with neither. The society that puts freedom before equality will end up with a great measure of both. The world is certainly a much poorer place without Friedman. Now I should add another half-dozen or so books to the 'to-read' pile.
