  Gerald Ford
Ford was the first politician I really ever had any (dim) awareness of - of course I was too ignorant as a child to realize what an evil man he must have been, but he did have the virtue of being a generally ineffective and do-nothing president, something I can always get behind in a politician. I didn't realize until this morning that there were two assasination attempts on his life.

Here's a weird thing: I think Ford was an attractive man physically. I'm just a sucker for the receding-hairline thing, I guess. He'll never come close to being my favorite president, though, an honor I reserve for the blowhard Wm Henry Harrison, who gave himself pneumonia with his long-winded innauguration speech and had the good sense to promptly die early in office. This is something I wish more presidents would strive for.

Comments:
The guy who succeeded him--Tyler--wasn't bad either. I think he has my vote for best (the least bad, of course) president. Get this:

"Harrison had been expected to adhere closely to Whig Party policies and work closely with Whig leaders, particularly Henry Clay. Tyler shocked Congressional Whigs by vetoing virtually the entire Whig agenda, twice vetoing Clay's legislation for a national banking act following the Panic of 1837 and leaving the government deadlocked."

T. Roosevelt said of Tyler, "He was a politician of monumental littleness."

They don't make 'em like they used to.

I let go of the law, and people become honest.
I let go of economics, and people become prosperous.
I let go of religion and people become serene.
I let go of all desire for the common good,
and the good becomes common as grass.
When the will to power is in charge,
the higher the ideals, the lower the results.
